How To Run Your Own Freight Broker business

Learn about the freight broker’s role in the shipping industry

Freight brokerage is a growing, service-based industry. As a freight agent or broker, you connect shippers and manufacturers with transportation companies and manage those shipments. Entrepreneur magazine has rated the freight brokerage business as one of the top home-based businesses to own, and a Wall Street Journal article cited freight brokering and logistics as the largest growing sector of the transportation industry.

What is a freight broker?

A freight broker arranges and makes provision for the transportation of shipments, but he or she doesn’t actually provide the transportation. They help the shipper and the motor carrier company, negotiate on both sides, and earn a fee for their work. Freight brokers use their expertise to set up the shipment, negotiate the terms of the transaction, and manage the shipment from its origin to its destination.

What does a freight broker do?

The freight broker works within the company to manage the day-to-day tasks required to move goods from place to place. They hire carriers and monitor financial aspects such as invoicing, paying agents, and monitoring credit. The government may require additional fees and paperwork for a brokerage license, but not for becoming a freight agent.

How do you get your freight broker license?

First, it is recommended that you enroll in a freight broker course to fully prepare for the position. Then there are very few steps required to get your freight broker license. You will need to establish a business structure, submit an application for motor carrier and broker authority (OP-1 Form), obtain a surety bond, select a process agent, and finally register the brokerage. A license is granted by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, FMCSA. You will fill out an application and pay a one-time fee. Once your application is approved, there is a 10-day waiting period before you are granted full license.

Savannah Tech wins national honors for creative design with 2019 Collegiate Advertising Awards

hero campaign promotional cards

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah Technical College’s HERO Faculty and Staff Campaign won first/gold in the U.S. for a fundraising campaign with the 2019 Collegiate Advertising Awards. The College also earned two silver awards for logo design and self-promotion.

The College first started its Helping Everyone Realize Opportunity (HERO) campaign in 2015. STC’s marketing team developed the brand, built the campaign around personal interaction and offered incentives for donors. The HERO character was created as the original mascot for the campaign. The campaign surpassed fundraising and participation goals.

In 2019, STC rebranded its HERO campaign with custom hero characters that featured STC faculty and staff. This inspiration came from an incident when the five-foot foam-core HERO lost his head. He was on his way to be presented during a best practices workshop feature the HERO campaign for other colleges. To salvage the character, STC’s marketing team rounded off his shoulders, so donors could put their head on them for a photo. That’s when the team thought of the idea to create custom digital hero illustrations, bringing new life to the campaign.

Last year’s HERO campaign included 92% participation from STC faculty/staff raised $34,600+, which offered 20 student scholarships in FY2020. This also includes 32 who pledged 1% of their salary.

STC also won silver for developing a custom logo to promote Career Connections, a website connecting STC students and graduates with employers. Eric Willis with Fluorescent Design Studio designed the logo.

Another effort to promote Career Services won silver for self-promotion. To direct students to find the Career Services office at the Savannah Campus, STC’s marketing team had student success photos installed on the office windows. Photos were taken by Stephen B. Morton and installed by The Kennickell Group. Morton’s STC student success photography has previously been recognized with national awards.

The Collegiate Advertising Awards is an elite national program seeking to recognize today’s most talented marketing professionals for outstanding excellence in all forms of advertising, marketing and promotion specific to higher education products and services. All entries are centralized for judging (per category) by a panel of design and education marketing professionals with decades of combined experience. Entries are judged on: creativity, layout/design, typography, production, quality and overall effectiveness.

Finding your place in the Voice-Over Industry

What is Voice-Over?

We hear voice-overs so much on a daily basis that we often don’t really think about it. During a time that many have been indoors for quarantine due to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic, you have probably heard more voice-over than ever. A voice-over may be heard on a video game you’re playing, an audiobook, a podcast you’re streaming, YouTube Video tutorial, or a commercial you’re watching for a well-known brand. (Sounding familiar yet?)

Merriam-Webster defines “Voice-over” as the “voice of an unseen narrator speaking (as in a motion picture or television commercial)”. It can also be “the voice of a visible character (as in a motion picture) expressing unspoken thoughts”.

The voice-over industry covers virtually all areas of media, from animation to video games to journalism to education. Talented and skilled voice-over professionals use their voices to convey information, establish a mood, and create characters. Every voice has a different sound, but each voice-over artist still has key elements in their delivery that are necessary to achieve a successful voice-over.

Who would be interested in taking a voice-over class?

Many people have been told their entire life, “You have a great voice” or “You have a great voice for radio!”, but they aren’t aware of the industry. Some may not think that voice-over is an option for them or they may not know how to get started in the voice-over business. If you haven’t been the recipient of this specific compliment, don’t worry. This may still be a great path for you.

How does a Voice-Over class work?

We’d love to tell you more about our Introduction to Voice-Over Workshop, offered in partnership with Such-A-Voice. This interactive class will show you how YOU could actually begin using your speaking voice for commercials, films, videos and more! In the class, participants will discover industry’s opportunities, the structure of advertising, how to make a demo, the kinds of voices in demand, and most importantly, obtain a proven process for finding work. Students will even have the opportunity to get a voice-evaluation by our instructor.

Who teaches the Voice-Over workshop?

By partnering with Such-A-Voice, we are able to have instructors lead the workshop who are currently working in the voice-over business! They have wide backgrounds, having voiced commercials for companies including Samsung, Audible, Transitions Lenses, Scholastic, Simple Skincare,  character work on various video games, eLearning projects, and animated videos and more.

How much does this class cost?

The cost of the class is $25 per attendee. You will leave with a wealth of information as well as a clear idea of if this is an area you would like to pursue further.

I want to take the class. How do I enroll?

We’re glad you’re interested in joining us. To enroll in the course, view our upcoming sessions to see which date works with your schedule then click the register now button.

Savannah Tech is the first in Georgia to offer virtual admissions for Adult Education

SAVANNAH, Ga. ~ Savannah Technical College has created a virtual admissions process for Adult Education including high school equivalency (GED) and English as a second language (ESL). As the first technical college in Georgia approved to offer this service, STC’s plan is being shared throughout the state as a model.

“I am so proud of my team for making this possible for the community,” said Dr. Thomas Bullock, STC’s dean of adult education. “We have already been helping hundreds of students since this pandemic started. Now we can register and serve new students with the need and time right now

Previously, the state of Georgia required in-person, notarized registration for adult education admissions. The College has been unable to register new adult education students since it closed to the public for COVID-19 social distancing.

The College continues to offer live instructor-led classes and self-paced online learning for both high school equivalency (GED) and ESL students.

New adult education students may now register online at https://www.savannahtech.edu/ged-esl/. There is a video explaining the registration process, links to submit new applications and an appointment with an advisor to confirm their registration. A state-issued ID is required to apply for adult education.
