Savannah Tech Expands Barbering Beginning Fall 2012

#1304 | July 19, 2012

“Train to Be A Cut Above The Rest”

SAVANNAH – The popular evening-only Barbering program at Savannah Technical College will expand this fall to include a day program at its Savannah campus.

Now, students have the option to choose the day or evening program paths to begin this fall with their cohorts. “We are pleased to offer more options for our barbering students,” said STC’s Lead Barbering Instructor Joycelin Primus. “The demand for our graduates is strong in Coastal Georgia.”

Barbers provide hair styling and beauty services, such as cutting, trimming, shampooing, and styling hair, trimming beards, or giving shaves. Barbers mostly work in a barbershop or salon. Physical stamina is important, because workers are on their feet for most of their shift. All states require barbers to be licensed, with the exception of shampooers. To qualify for a license, candidates must graduate from a state-approved barbering program like the one at Savannah Technical College.

Savannah Technical College’s Master Barber/Stylist program gives students the skills and confidence to excel as a professional barber. Students approach the state licensing examinations backed by hands-on, industry-relevant experience and make a seamless transition from training to the professional world. They learn the classic skills, newest techniques and hands-on experience needed to be a world-class barber, as well as the business skills and management preparation to launch a successful career.

For more information about the STC’s Master Barber/Stylist program, please contact Primus at 912.443.5879 or jprimus@savannahtech.edu.

Three-day Introduction to and Application of Lean Production

#1303 | July 18, 2012

Let’s Talk Lean!

Savannah Tech offers 3-day Introduction to and Application of Lean Production

SAVANNAH – Business owners can create more value for their customers with fewer resources, using the core principle of the lean business model. Savannah Technical College’s Professional Continuing Education will offer this three-day (24-hour) introduction and explanation of techniques and implementation of lean production values.

Toni Kennedy, Owner/President of GEMBAlean, brings more than two decades as a trainer and is Lean Senior Manager for TRW. She will lead the three-day course covering topics including: The 7 Wastes, Where You Should Start, Management by Site, Standardized Work, Communication/Continuous Improvement, One Piece Flow, Quick Changeover and Implementing Lean.

The course will be offered from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. on August 14-16 at the Crossroads campus of Savannah Technical College. The cost is $1,000 per person, and there is a corporate rate available. To register or for more information, contact Reeshemah Johnson at 912.443.5808 or email rjohnson@savannahtech.edu.

Lean thinking changes the focus of management from optimizing separate technologies, assets, and vertical departments to optimizing the flow of products and services through entire value streams that flow horizontally across technologies, assets, and departments to customers.

Businesses in all industries and services, including healthcare and governments, are using lean principles as the way they think and do. The word transformation or ‘lean transformation’ is often used to characterize a company moving from an old way of thinking to lean thinking. It requires a complete transformation on how a company conducts business. This takes a long-term perspective and perseverance. The term “lean” was coined to describe Toyota’s business during the late 1980s by a research team headed by Jim Womack, Ph.D., at MIT’s International Motor Vehicle Program.

Savannah Technical College’s Professional Continuing Education pledges to provide professional short-term job training and community interest classes for Savannah Technical College’s four-county service area and offers many paths to high-wage, high-performance careers. No previous college experience, entrance exams or high school diploma/GED are required to participate in its classes.
