SAVANNAH, Ga. — Twenty-two transitioning service members celebrated their graduation today from the Heroes MAKE America (HMA) program, an initiative of the Manufacturing Institute. These graduates completed an intensive eight-week program at the Fort Stewart Education Center in partnership with Savannah Technical College.
The program equips participants with vital skills and certifications needed for careers in manufacturing and logistics, including 40 hours of logistics instruction, 30 hours of safety training, 10 hours of soft skills development, and 10 hours of facility tours. Participants also dedicated countless hours tailoring their résumés in preparation for civilian careers.
“Today marks an important step in the transitioning process, and I know each graduate is excited to step into the civilian workforce,” said Toniette Sumpter, program manager for the Heroes MAKE America program at Fort Stewart.
Graduates earned industry-recognized credentials such as the Certified Logistics Associate and Certified Logistics Technician certifications, OSHA-30 Certification, Lean Six Sigma Green Belt, and forklift safety operator training. The hybrid program combines instructor-led sessions, self-paced modules, and hands-on learning, including virtual reality components.
“This program prepares individuals for front-line material handling and supply chain logistics roles in fulfillment centers, warehouses, distribution centers, and manufacturing facilities,” Sumpter said.
A Commitment to Supporting Service Members
The Heroes MAKE America initiative bridges the gap between the military community and the manufacturing industry. The Manufacturing Institute is committed to expanding the program to assist transitioning service members, veterans, and their families while helping manufacturers fill critical workforce gaps.
With a 91% graduate placement rate, Heroes MAKE America participants have joined more than 350 companies in 48 states, taking on roles in maintenance, operations, production, and logistics at various levels, from entry-level to management.
“Our training program is at no cost to participants, and this success would not be possible without the support of Savannah Technical College,” said Sumpter.
STC President Dr. Ryan Foley shared his appreciation for the service members and the significance of the college’s partnership with HMA: “We are honored to support this remarkable program and the service members who have given so much to our country. By partnering with Heroes MAKE America, we help provide these individuals with the skills and certifications they need to excel in their next chapter while strengthening the workforce in our community.”
Community Collaboration
Sumpter extended gratitude to the local community and corporate sponsors who support the program. “To our local partners who open their doors for facility tours, provide soft skills training, and engage with our students on career opportunities, we are deeply thankful,” she said.
Patrick Bean, leader of the transition team at Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield, also received recognition for rallying community and company support. “Your dedication to supporting service members makes a meaningful impact,” Sumpter said.
The Heroes MAKE America program stands as a testament to the power of collaboration between the military, education, and industry. Today’s graduates join a growing network of skilled professionals contributing to America’s manufacturing and supply chain sectors.
