SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah Technical College Historic Preservation student Maegan “Mae” Bowley has been accepted into the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art Summer Studio in New York City.
Over four weeks (June 18th thru July 14th), she will study the foundations of classical architectural design through coursework in:
- Classical elements and principles of composition
- Literature of classical architecture
- Proportion and geometry
- Traditional urban form
- Observational and analytical drawing and rendering
- Study of precedent
The curriculum is structured within a classical design studio and culminates in a design project for a new classical building. Studio work is complemented by on-site study of classical buildings throughout New York City and its environs. Visits to architectural offices provide the opportunity for students to engage directly with leading design firms.
Coursework is taught by architects and faculty active in the field of classical and traditional design practice and teaching. Upon completion of the program, students receive the ICAA’s Certificate in Classical Architecture.
As the only public hands-on Historic Preservation program in Georgia and one of seven in the U.S., Savannah Technical College has led the way in preservation education, specializing in training not typically held by construction workers. The program has gained international recognition and has contributed to a number of community-based preservation projects in the surrounding communities. Traditional Building Magazine named Savannah Tech’s Historic Preservation program one of the nation’s Up and Coming programs.
STC’s summer semester starts May 29, and new students are encouraged to apply by May 11. For more information visit:www.savannahtech.edu/CenterTraditionalCraft or contact STC’s Historic Preservation Department Head Benjamin Curran at bcurran@savannahtech.edu or 912.443.5864.
