Savannah Technical College joins American Welding Society as an Educational Institution Member

SAVANNAH – Savannah Technical College has joined the American Welding Society as an Educational Institution Member for 2011. The American Welding Society (AWS) was founded in 1919 as a multifaceted, nonprofit organization with a goal to advance the science, technology and application of welding and related joining disciplines. AWS serves more than 66,000 members worldwide. Membership consists of engineers, scientists, educators, researchers, welders, inspectors, welding foremen, company executives and officers, and corporate members including welding manufactures, independent welding shops, distributorship, end-users, educational institutions and more. Member interests include automatic, semi-automatic and manual welding, as well as brazing, soldering, ceramics, lamination, robotics, and welding safety and health.

Savannah Technical College offers diploma and certificates in Welding and Joining Technology including Flat Shielded Metal Arc Welding, Gas Metal Arc Welding and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding. Students who complete the diploma are eligible for x-ray certification, signifying the soundness of their welding skills. “Companies spend large amounts of money every year to certify welders to work for them, “says Bill Burns, STC Welding Department Head. “They feel better about hiring someone that has been certified and will be willing to invest the money to help them maintain their certification.”

The college currently has more than 100 students enrolled in welding classes and an active student chapter of AWS. The program enjoys strong industry partnerships to support welding graduates.
