Commercial Truck Driving students may now have more financial assistance
SAVANNAH – Students may register for ‘Mini-Mester’ classes at Savannah Technical College beginning October 1. These classes will start on October 17 and last through the end of fall semester (December 11).
During the condensed semester, students may take select classes in programs like accounting, paralegal studies, electrical utility technology, air conditioning, certified nurse aide, commercial truck driving and dental hygiene. Students may take online classes including Introduction to Computers (COMP1000), Interpersonal Relations and Professional Development (EMPL1000) and Administrative Law (PARA1215). Some general education classes are also available during the mini-mester.
The College’s nurse aide certificate at the Savannah, Effingham and Liberty campuses prepares students with classroom training and clinical experience to care for patients in various settings. CNAs work in nursing care facilities, community care facilities for the elderly and home health care services.
The technical certificate of credit for Commercial Truck Driving may be earned during the fall mini-mester and qualifies students to test for a commercial truck-driving license (CDL). Commercial Truck Driving classes are offered at the Effingham (2890 Hwy 21 South, Rincon, 31326) and Liberty (100 Technology Drive, Hinesville, 31313) campuses.
Commercial Truck Driving students who are receiving the HOPE Grant may also be eligible for additional financial assistance from Georgia’s Strategic Industries Workforce Development Grant (SIWDG) Award. To qualify, the student must be admitted to the College, enrolled in the program and receiving the HOPE Grant for the same term. The fixed SIWDG award amount for one term only for CTD is $1,000. HOPE GED Grant, HOPE Grant, and SIWDG Award can be awarded in the same term, if all other eligibility requirements are met. High school students in dual enrollment programs are not eligible for the SIWDG Award.
Early Childhood Care/Education and Practical Nursing students receiving the HOPE Grant are also eligible for a SIWDG award up to $500 per term for nine or more credits or $250 per term for less than nine credits.
