Associate of Science in Nursing FAQ

The Georgia Board of Nursing (GBON) granted initial approval for the Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) program at Savannah Technical College (11/14/24). The first cohort of 24 students began in January 2025.

Minimum GPA required for competitive selection?

3.0 is required for entry with prerequisite core courses.

What additional core courses are required for ASN program completion? Courses may also be taken once accepted into the ASN program.

What is the required core course expiration date?

Math and science courses must be no older than five years at the competitive selection application deadline. This includes MATH 1101/1103/1111, BIOL 2113/L, BIOL 2114/L, BIO 2117/L

Is an entrance test required for competitive selection? When should I take it?

Yes, TEAS test will be used as part of the calculation for ranking eligible applicants. TEAS scores expire after three years. The initial cohort had a minimum score of 65 (total). Take the TEAS test when you feel prepared, allowing time for study and retakes before the deadline, if necessary. Applicants must take the TEAS exam by the program application deadline. TEAS scores for the ASN selection process have an expiration date of three (3) years. If multiple scores are received within a 3-year period, the most current attempt will be used in the selection process. For the ASN program, a minimum score of 65 (total score) is required. Beginning August 1, 2024, all TEAS testing must be taken In-Person. Proctoring institutions include Savannah Technical College, PSI Testing Centers, and other select academic institutions. If the most recent TEAS score is from an Online TEAS test taken prior to August 1, 2024, the score will be accepted unless it expired according to the program’s selection criteria.

Applicants must take the TEAS exam by the program application deadline. The TEAS exam will be used as part of the calculation for ranking eligible applicants. Beginning August 1, 2024, all TEAS testing must be taken in person. Proctoring institutions include Savannah Technical College, PSI Testing Centers, and other select academic institutions. If the most recent TEAS score is from an Online TEAS test taken prior to August 1, 2024, the score will be accepted unless it has expired according to the program’s selection criteria. Students may choose to take the TEAS exam at the STC testing center or at another In-Person testing facility. If a TEAS exam was taken at another institution within the past three (3) years, it is the applicant’s responsibility to have their scores sent to STC. There is a 14-day waiting period to retake the TEAS test. Remediation is strongly encouraged for any applicant who does not make the required total score of 65 on the TEAS exam before retaking the exam. Copies of the Official ATI TEAS Study Manual are reserved at the STC libraries on the Liberty and Savannah campuses for student use in-house. What is the cost for the competitive selection application?

Competitive selection application is $25. Applicants must also be admitted as a STC student ($25 application).

Must applicants be in-state for competitive selection?

Priority selection will be given to in-state students, as well as those with a military affiliation. Out-of-state and non-citizen students will be considered for selection on a space available basis.

Will transfer credits be accepted for competitive selection?

Transferred courses will be included in the GPA calculation where applicable. Note there is a five-year expiration for MATH and BIOL 2113/L, BIOL 2114/L, BIOL 2117/L. The minimum GPA for competitive selection is 3.0.

Do you give credit for nursing courses taken at other schools?

No, we do not accept credit for previously taken nursing courses

Is the program accredited and approved?

The College received initial approval with Georgia Board of Nursing on November 11, 2024. It is currently working to get accredited with ACEN (Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing).

Which program should I apply to before being accepted into the ASN program?

Interdisciplinary Studies.

I have taken Statistics recently, but not the listed math courses in the past five years. Will that count?

Only the listed Math courses (MATH 1111 College Algebra, MATH 1103 Quantitative Skills and Reasoning, or MATH 1101 Mathematical Modeling) are acceptable.

Do I need to be a CNA to apply?

No, being a CNA is not a requirement for application, though points are awarded for previous licenses, certifications, and experience as specified in the selection criteria.

Will Savannah Tech have an LPN to RN Bridge?

The College must wait until the ASN program has been established for two years. The earliest an LPN to RN bridge could be available is 2027.

What degree will I receive upon graduation and which exam do I get to sit for licensure?

Upon graduation, you will receive an Associates of Science in Nursing and will be able to sit for the NCLEX-RN exam for licensure as an RN.

What is the graduation rate and pass rate for the NCLEX-RN exams?

We currently do not have data for graduation rates or NCLEX-RN pass rates.

Will the program provide high-quality clinical experiences and hands-on labs?

Yes, the program will include clinical experiences in long-term care facilities, hospitals, and community organizations. Skills labs for fundamentals, pharmacology, and Maternal/Baby courses will be provided, along with simulation labs in all nursing courses.

What academic support resources are available?

We plan to offer peer groups, faculty-led voluntary study sessions, and online programs to support students with course material.

How much will it cost to attend the program?

We plan to offer peer groups, faculty-led voluntary study sessions, and online programs to support In-state tuition is $107 per credit hour. Additional costs include uniforms, textbooks, ATI fees, and onboarding fees for clinical sites, which are yet to be determined.

Are there waivers or discounted tuition rates available?

Yes, active duty and full-time members of the U.S. Armed Forces, residents of Beaufort and Jasper Counties in South Carolina, and Georgia senior citizens (age 62+) may be eligible for discounted or waived tuition.

How is the selection process scored and ranked?

Applicants are ranked based on GPA and TEAS total scores. Additional points are given for college degrees, health care certifications, and relevant experience. In a tie, TEAS total score, GPA, and TEAS Math score are used as tiebreakers.

What are the optional items for additional rank points?

Points can be added for completed college certificates, diplomas, or degrees and for having active/current health care certifications or relevant experience.
