Savannah Technical College to Salute Community STARS

SAVANNAH – The Savannah Technical College Foundation Community Council will host the 2014 Tribute to Community STARS at noon on Friday, March 28, 2014, in the Eckburg Auditorium on the College’s Savannah Campus, 5717 White Bluff Road. The event, now in its eighth year, honors more than 20 individuals nominated for their service and dedication at work or in the community, while raising funds for the Savannah Tech Foundation scholarship fund.

“This event has become a wonderful tradition for our community,” said STC’s Executive Director of Institutional Advancement and Communication. “The people being honored are amazing, and the sponsors are very generous. Because funds raised support scholarships, Savannah Technical College students benefit directly.”

Savannah Technical College has a strong commitment to supporting students from every walk of life in their academic pursuits. With a diverse student body, the College serves as a primary training center of the region’s workforce, serving a wide range of full-time and part-time students. Even though Savannah Tech offers the most affordable education in the region — $85 per credit hour as compared to public universities at nearly twice that and private institutions at triple that cost – many students simply cannot afford to attend. More than 80% of all students meet the eligibility requirements to receive state or federal financial assistance to attend college.

The Savannah Technical College Foundation, founded in 1984, is a private, nonprofit organization that exists to raise and disburse funds to support the College’s efforts to enhance learning, workforce training and economic development in Bryan, Chatham, Effingham and Liberty counties. The STC Foundation also supports student success through its privately-funded scholarships. The STC Foundation currently awards between $75,000 and $100,000 in privately-funded scholarships annually, but that total meets only a fraction of the overall need.

The Tribute to the Community STARS is an annual event that not only helps recognize the members of the community but also serves as one of the leading events to help students fund their higher education. Tickets are $100.  Proceeds from the tickets, as well as silent auction items produced by current students, will go to the STC Foundation.

Spending associated with Savannah Tech has a nearly $57 million impact in its region

UGA economist: technical colleges are ‘an enduring pillar’ of state’s regional economy

Savannah, GA – In fiscal year 2012, Savannah Technical College had an economic impact on its four-county service area of nearly $57 million with spending directly or indirectly related to the college, according to a new study released by the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia.

Dr. Jeffrey M. Humphreys, director of the Selig Center for Economic Growth at the University of Georgia’s Terry College of Business, conducted his analysis of economic data from the Technical College System of Georgia for FY2012 (July 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012).

The study also found that the college’s spending results in 707 public and private sector jobs. Humphreys reported that statewide, for each job created on a TCSG college campus, one off-campus job exists because of college-related expenditures.  One in every 264 non-farm jobs in Georgia, he said, occurs because of spending associated with a TCSG college.

“The fundamental finding is that each of the TCSG colleges, including Savannah Technical College, creates substantial economic impacts in terms of output, value-added, labor income, and employment. These economic impacts demonstrate that continued emphasis on technical colleges as an enduring pillar of the regional economy translates into jobs, higher incomes, and greater production of goods and services for local households and businesses,” said Humphreys.

The TCSG commissioned Humphreys to calculate the importance that spending connected to the state’s technical colleges has for their service delivery areas, which range in size from two to eleven counties.  Savannah Technical College serves Bryan, Chatham, Effingham and Liberty Counties. Several categories of college expenditures were reviewed for the study, including personnel salaries and fringe benefits, college operations, capital construction projects, and student spending, to name a few.

The result, put in the context of the taxpayer investment, indicated that the $10,743,586 state appropriation for Savannah Technical College in FY2012 supported the enrollment of 7,401 students, generated $56,935,335 in local spending, and helped to sustain almost 707 college-related jobs.

Statewide, the $315 million state appropriation for the TCSG in FY2012 helped to train almost 153,000 technical college students, contributed to $1.2 billion in direct and indirect spending in communities throughout Georgia, and was a factor in almost 15,000 public and private sector jobs.

“The spending factor alone is a sizable return on the state’s investment in the TCSG, and it would be significantly higher if we were to add the economic value that our graduates create once they leave college and meet employers’ needs for a skilled workforce,” said Ron Jackson, commissioner of the TCSG.

The study did not attempt to measure the value in terms of the increased earnings of TCSG graduates or the colleges’ role in helping the state to attract and retain companies with high-skill, good-paying jobs.  Nor did it calculate the impact of the TCSG’s Quick Start program, a state economic development incentive that provides customized training free of charge to new and expanding businesses.

STC Honors Matthew Tuttle as its 2014 GOAL Winner

SAVANNAH – Surgical Technology student Matthew Tuttle has been selected as the Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL) winner for Savannah Technical College. GOAL honors outstanding students at each of the Technical College System of Georgia institutions. He will represent Savannah Tech at regional and statewide events to select a student to serve as the ambassador for technical education across the state. The highly competitive process involves academic success, community engagement and public speaking. Winners are nominated by their instructors and selected after interviews with a panel of business and community leaders.

Matthew, a Savannah native, is enrolled in the Surgical Technology program and expects to graduate this year. He is a graduate of Benedictine Military School and Armstrong Atlantic State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Science. He served as a CPR instructor for the American Red Cross and currently serves as a volunteer and instructor with Crossfit Savannah.  He also served as a member of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee for several years.

“Technical education allows me to study a field of my choosing that is lenient on both my time and my finances, but most importantly will allow me to work locally upon completion,” said Matthew in his GOAL biography.  “The education I receive will make me marketable and desirable in my local job market.” Matthew will represent Savannah Tech at the regional competition in March before heading to the statewide competition in April in Atlanta, where the statewide GOAL winner will be selected.
