English as a Second Language (ESL)

Our Adult Education English classes are free and open to all eligible applicants. We offer classes online and in-person at our campus locations in Savannah, Pooler, Midway, Rincon and Hinesville. Our classes focus on all four language skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking) and are offered at a range of skill levels.

Students must be living or working in our service area (Chatham, Effingham, Liberty and Bryan counties) and must be present for in-person registration.

Students must provide an unexpired photo identification as follows:

US Citizens – driver’s license, state ID, US passport, or military ID

Permanent Residents – permanent resident card / green card

Nonimmigrant Aliens – documentation that shows your status such as employment authorization card, US visa (NOT B1/B2 or F1 unless with a USCIS form showing an application for change of status or asylum pending), or a document issued by the US government with a photograph & A-number

Photos on phones are not accepted. You must provide the actual document or identification. 

Students must be 16 years and older. Students aged 16-17 years must have a parent or guardian present at registration and bring a letter of non-enrollment from public school.

Students must commit to taking a placement test, attending class for 40-60 hours (2-3 months), and taking a second test to demonstrate progress. Students must attend class regularly and consistently for a minimum of 6 hours per week.

Step 1:  Make a registration appointment – All students must make an appointment for an in-person registration session.

Step 2:  Attend your registration session – After you make an appointment, you will attend your registration session. At registration, you will complete your online application. Registration should take about 1 hour. You will receive all the information you need about our class schedule, program requirements and student opportunities. Please remember to bring your chosen form of ID.

Step 3: Take a placement test – At your registration session you will receive a date to return to take your placement test. This test usually takes about 1 hour and will help us find the right class level for you.

Step 4:  Begin English classes – After you complete your test, you will receive a class placement and you will be ready to start classes.

**You may not register for ESL classes at our campuses. You must sign-up using the above link. If our registration is closed, you must wait until our next registration session opens.**
