The Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety has renewed Savannah Technical College’s grant ($140,571.50) for a second year (FY22) to operate the Coastal Georgia Center for Driver Safety. Grant funds will continue to provide two core services: distracted and impaired driver prevention education for youth, young adults and parents in Bryan, Chatham, Effingham, and Liberty counties.

Nine students from the Savannah Technical College Peace Officer Academy celebrated graduating from the program with a completion ceremony on December 10, 2021. The six men and three women have completed coursework containing the entire Georgia Peace Officer Standards & Training (P.O.S.T.) Basic Law Enforcement Training Course. Their successful completion of the program qualifies them to be state-certified peace officers.

Michelle Maynard has been selected as the 2022 Savannah Technical College Exceptional Adult Georgian in Literacy Education (EAGLE) recipient. She is a dual enrollment student taking GED-prep classes, along with Cybersecurity courses through STC’s Fast Forward program.

Savannah Technical College recently selected Wendy Herndon as department head for Dental Assisting. Herndon has nearly four decades of experience as a dental assistant and dental hygienist. She has taught both dental hygiene and dental assisting. She has been a dental hygiene instructor at Savannah Tech for the past 2.5 years.  

Construction Management student Cristian Veloso was one of 11 students in the U.S. to receive a $2,500 scholarship from Fine Homebuilding. He is president of STC’s SkillsUSA chapter. His OSHA team won gold/first in the national SkillsUSA competition, after winning gold in the state competition.

Savannah Technical College recently selected Bridget Betterson as department head for Surgical Technology. Betterson has nearly two decades of experience as a certified surgical technologist with the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting.

Savannah Technical College and its Foundation received two awards when the TCSG gathered for its annual leadership conference. STC's Foundation earned TCFA's 2021 Role Model Foundation Board Certification for the sixth consecutive year. Savannah Tech's Board of Directors earned 100% board certification for all members for academic year 2021.

Savannah Technical College Foundation announced today that Bank of America has committed $250,000 in funding to support workforce development initiatives at Savannah Technical College. Funding will be split over two years and will be focused toward removing financial barriers for low- to middle-income, underrepresented minority students. The gift will support gap funding for students in high demand industries, fast-track non-credit training and emergency/last-mile financial assistance.

The Gene Haas Foundation has given $5,000 to support student scholarships and student competition teams at Savannah Technical College. Up to half of the gift may be used for student competition that highlights CNC/Manufacturing. This gift continues the Haas Foundation’s support of STC students with the scholarship established in 2017.
