Savannah Tech offers online hospitality training

SAVANNAH, GA – Savannah Technical College is offering online non-credit hospitality training to help those displaced workers advance in their careers when they return to work or start a new career with a nationally recognized certification. In an effort to serve the hospitality community that was hit so hard by this pandemic, the College will offer the course at a drastically discounted rate of $25 per person compared with the regular cost of $650 per person.

“The hospitality and tourism sectors offer unparalleled opportunities for advancement and success,” said Tourism Leadership Council President/CEO Michael T. Owens. “Taking advantage of the programing at Savannah Technical College allows individuals to jump start their career or accelerate career advancement.”

The Hospitality Foundations course helps those that want to stand out among other applicants and advance their career. It also offers participants an option to explore the hospitality industry before entering the field. With the expansion of new hotels in historic Savannah, there is a projected demand to hire nearly 1,700 within the next year.

Scholarships will offset the next session cost to $25 per person, which is regularly priced at $650. The cost of the 48-hour online course includes the certification testing cost. Register now for the hospitality course at https://www.savannahtech.edu/business-industry/hospitalityfoundations. The next four-week session will be held online from 9 a.m. until noon on Tuesdays through Fridays starting May 19.

The nationally recognized certification is determined by an exam created by the American Hotel and Lodging Educational Institute (AHLEI), a nationally recognized organization that certifies and validates competencies in conjunction with academia and industry experts for more than 20 positions in the hospitality industry. Professional certification from AHLEI is the ultimate distinction of professional excellence for the hospitality industry.

Upon passing the certification exam, students will be certified with the following credentials: Certified Guest room Attendant, Certified Restaurant Server, and Certified Front Desk Representative.

Gloria Johnson, a Savannah native who has been a part of Savannah’s Hospitality Industry for more than a decade, teaches the course. She has taught this course for Goodwill in Savannah and is a hospitality trainer and job coach. She uses her experiences and current work to enhance training skills and techniques for others.

Savannah Tech is the first in Georgia to offer virtual admissions for Adult Education

SAVANNAH, Ga. ~ Savannah Technical College has created a virtual admissions process for Adult Education including high school equivalency (GED) and English as a second language (ESL). As the first technical college in Georgia approved to offer this service, STC’s plan is being shared throughout the state as a model.

“I am so proud of my team for making this possible for the community,” said Dr. Thomas Bullock, STC’s dean of adult education. “We have already been helping hundreds of students since this pandemic started. Now we can register and serve new students with the need and time right now

Previously, the state of Georgia required in-person, notarized registration for adult education admissions. The College has been unable to register new adult education students since it closed to the public for COVID-19 social distancing.

The College continues to offer live instructor-led classes and self-paced online learning for both high school equivalency (GED) and ESL students.

New adult education students may now register online at https://www.savannahtech.edu/ged-esl/. There is a video explaining the registration process, links to submit new applications and an appointment with an advisor to confirm their registration. A state-issued ID is required to apply for adult education.

In Academic Year 2019 (July 1, 2018 – June 30, 2019), Savannah Technical College yielded 486 GED graduates. One of those graduates, Victoria “Ida” Nelson, was named STC’s Exceptional Adult Georgian in Literacy Education (EAGLE) student of the year. Also, she was selected as the runner up for TCSG – Technical College System of Georgia EAGLE student of the year. Nelson earned her GED in October 2019 and is now enrolled in STC’s Emergency Medical Services diploma program. Her goal is to become a coroner. Currently, she works in the food and beverage industry.

Savannah Tech’s Adult Education Program serves those who need to improve their basic literacy and math skills, improve their oral and written English, practice for the GED® test to attain a high school equivalency degree, and prepare for college. Instructors also help students with science and social studies test preparation for GED® testing. Adult education classes for GED®-prep are currently free for all U.S. citizens. To register for free GED® classes, call 912.443.5446 or visit www.savannahtech.edu/FreeGEDClasses.

Savannah Tech donates supplies to support Liberty Regional Medical Center

STC Thermometer cover donation Liberty Regional

HINESVILLE, Ga. – Savannah Technical College donated 15,000 thermometer covers (60 boxes) to Liberty Regional Medical Center recently.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a shortage of medical supplies throughout Georgia. Liberty Regional Medical Center reached out to Savannah Technical College to see if the College could help fill a desperate need for thermometer probe covers. STC Board of Directors member, Donald Lovette, is the Director of Laboratory Services at Liberty Regional and helped facilitate the request with Savannah Technical College.

“We would like to thank Savannah Technical College for the very generous contribution of much-needed thermometer probe covers. In the wake of COVID-19, supply chains around the country are struggling to keep up with the demand for medical supplies,” said Liberty Regional Medical Center Chief Executive Officer Tammy Mims. “We are using more and more of a supply of these and other PPE to screen patients for COVID-19, and this contribution will help tremendously.”

The thermometer probe covers are used in health sciences training programs at the College.

“I am pleased that we could help Liberty Regional Medical Center obtain these much-needed medical supplies. They have been such a great training partner to and employer of our health sciences students. Thankfully, we had a supply of the thermometer probe covers and were able to make this donation,” said Savannah Technical College President Dr. Kathy Love.

Previously, the College donated 30,000 individual nitrile gloves and about 150 N95 masks to the Georgia Emergency Management Agency as a part of a statewide Technical College System of Georgia response to PPE shortages. These were then distributed by GEMA to Georgia medical facilities to help in the fight against the spread of COVID-19. Several College faculty have also been using 3D printers to print face masks and shields for frontline workers’ protection during this pandemic.

Liberty Regional hires graduates from all of the College’s health sciences training programs. STC’s Liberty Campus offers programs in Practical Nursing, Emergency Medical Services and Health Care Assistant with specializations in phlebotomy, certified nurse aide, patient care technician, and others.
