Savannah Technical College Opens Dental Hygiene Facility New lab space supports rigorous program of study and clinical space for patients

SAVANNAH – When Savannah Technical College (STC) opened the doors to its new Dental Hygiene Clinic Thursday evening, things were as sparkly as a smile fresh from a dental cleaning.

“I’m especially proud that we are able to offer the Dental Hygiene program at Savannah Technical College,” said College President Kathy S. Love. “It is the perfect example of our commitment to local workforce development. We listened to area dentists’ concerns and worked diligently to create a seamless transfer of location and administration of the program last year.”

The Dental Hygiene program, operated for 44 years by Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU), was transferred to Savannah Technical College last year, when AASU made known its plan to eliminate the program. Once Savannah Tech was granted the transfer of the accreditation by the American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation, arrangements were made to lease program and clinical space from Armstrong. While the construction on the new facility was completed, faculty were hired, including supervising dentists, and classes were taught without academic interruption for students.

The new facility, on the College’s Savannah Campus, is a mix of renovated space (7,745 square feet) and new construction (6,407 square feet). It includes a clinical lab with 24 dental hygiene stations, four radiology rooms, a dental materials lab, two classrooms, specialized spaces for records, sterilization, and patient reception, as well as six faculty offices and an administrative area. Designed by Hansen Architects of Savannah and built by Benning Construction, the cost of the project was $1.81 M.

Dental Hygiene Department Head Dr. Suzanne Edenfield has been with the program for 30 years providing instruction, clinical supervision and administrative leadership. According to Edenfield, “Our students and patients love this space. We are very pleased to be here.”

The 82-credit-hour program for an Associate of Science in Dental Hygiene accepts approximately 24 students annually. Students provide clinical patient care as a component of their curriculum requirements. Edenfield is proud of the program’s record of success, noting that most students are offered employment positions pending successful completion of two credentialing examinations and licensure. The program has had 100% licensure pass rate for many years.

The program utilizes a competitive admissions process. Students wishing to enter the Dental Hygiene program must complete an application packet by May 1, 2013 for admission to the Fall class. For more information about program admission, please contact STC’s Health Sciences Academic Advisor Heather Valentine (hvalentine@savannahtech.edu or 912.443.5721) or Dr. Suzanne Edenfield (sedenfield@savannahtech.edu).

Visiting Artisan Series Welcomes Stained Glass Expert Küpper

#1311 | September 12, 2012

SAVANNAH – Savannah Technical College’s Historic Preservation Department will host H. Thomas Küpper to kick off its Visiting Artisan series for the 2012-13 academic year. He is the glazing department team leader at Lincoln Cathedral and is responsible for the conservation and preservation of the more than 720 plain and historic stained glass windows in a building called ” the most precious piece of architecture in the British Isles.” His visit to Savannah is in conjunction with the upcoming Association for Preservation Technology International (APT) / Preservation Trades Network (PTN) parallel conferences in Charleston, S.C.

Back by popular demand, Küpper will be at the College’s Savannah campus September 25 – 28, 2012 (5717 White Bluff Road, Savannah, GA 31405). He will work with STC Historic Preservation students on advanced conservation techniques for stained glass, including cleaning, copper foil repairs and chemical edge bonding. Also he will cover proper documentation techniques for stained glass conservation. Küpper and the STC students will work on an 1884 window donated by John Galik of Sanctuary Place Inn.

This window will be used for hands-on training during the APT post-conference, two-day workshop “What’s Wrong with My Windows?” held at Savannah Tech on October 3rd and 4th. The APT workshop is hosted by the College and will be taught by Küpper, STC’s Historic Preservation Department Head Steve Hartley, and Art Femenella of Femenella and Associates of Branchburg, N.J. Spots are still available for this workshop, which qualifies for AIA credits. Workshop participants do not need to register for the entire Conference. For more information or to register, please visit the APT website at www.aptconference.org.

Fernenella has three decades of experience in stained glass and has worked for studios such as Greenland and Jack Cushin before starting his own business. He has held positions within the Stained Glass Association of American and is one of the founders and past presidents of the American Glass Guild.

The APT/PTN conferences will focus on collaborative approaches to preservation between architects, engineers, conservators, and trades people from around the world, and Savannah Tech Historic Preservation students will have the unique opportunity to participate. Many will learn about plaster and masonry repairs at the Old Charleston Jail during a pre-conference workshop with Gerard Lynch (STC Visiting Artisan February 2012) and Andy DeGruchy. Other STC students will work with Rudy Christian (Visiting Artisan March 2012) and students of the American College of Building Arts, as they build two timber frame replica gun carriages that will be installed at Fort Sumter.

The Visiting Artisan Series is the first effort of its kind at any of Georgia’s technical colleges, bringing three world-class craftsmen to campus each for a week throughout the year. The most recent visiting artisan was Christian, who helped STC students raise a traditional timber-frame structure.

The next Visiting Artisan, tentatively scheduled for November 12-19, will feature Jeff and Henry Orton, a father-son plastering team from Milton Mowberry, U.K. Jeff has more than 40 years in the plastering business, working on a vast array of sites throughout the world. His son Henry, after pursuing his university degree, followed his father into the plastering trades and today is working for a pargetting company. Jeff and Henry will teach STC students bench running and in-situ crown molding running.

Savannah Tech has the only hands-on preservation program in the state. The program has gained international recognition and has contributed to a number of community-based preservation projects in the surrounding communities. The program is the cornerstone of new instructional programs in Green Building Technology, which focuses on a comprehensive view of systems and efficiencies in construction. TCSG State Board Approves Tuition Increase for 2013

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Thursday, September  6, 2012

Contact: Mike Light

TCSG Executive Director

Atlanta – The state board that oversees the Technical College System of Georgia today approved the system’s request for a tuition increase of $10 per credit hour starting next year.

TCSG students at the 25 TCSG colleges will pay $85 per credit hour beginning in the spring 2013 semester. As a result, tuition for a full, 15-hour course load will cost $1,275 next semester, or $150 more than today.

Three-quarters of TCSG students use HOPE to help pay for their tuition, mostly in the form of the HOPE grant, which pays $60.75 per credit hour. With the increase, students who enroll under the HOPE grant will pay $364 in out of pocket tuition for a full semester, up from the $214 that they currently spend

In addition, the TCSG board approved a new $50 institutional fee beginning in spring 2013 and a $50 fee for online courses starting in fall 2013. TCSG students will pay, on average, a total of $223 in fees starting in the spring.

Once the expense of books is added in, usually about $500, the total cost to attend a TCSG college full-time for a semester next year will be just under $2,000. The out-of-pocket cost for students who qualify for the HOPE grant will be about $1,086.

Many students can reduce the cost of their TCSG education if they qualify for the federal Pell grant, which is awarded based on financial need.Last year, more than half of the 170,000 students who enrolled at TCSG colleges utilized the Pell grant.

“A tuition and fee increase was made necessary by the rising expenses to deliver our programs and lower state appropriations,” said TCSG Commissioner Ron Jackson. “A state technical college education remains an excellent value compared to the cost, yet we fully understand the impact that any additional expense has on our students. The colleges will do all that they can to provide sources of financial assistance to those who need it most. We’re committed to seeing that all of our students get the opportunity they deserve to be a part of Georgia’s 21st century workforce.”

About the TCSG: The 25 colleges of the Technical College System of Georgia offer affordable education and excellent training in more than 600 certificate, diploma and two-year associate degree programs. Students of all ages take advantage of outstanding instructors, hands-on learning and state-of-the-art equipment to gain the skills needed for today’s in-demand jobs.

In 2012, the TCSG colleges delivered 2.7 million credit hours of instruction to 170,000 students. The TCSG is online, too, serving 85,000 students through the system’s Georgia Virtual Technical Connection. Many TCSG students enjoy the benefits of Georgia’s HOPE grant and scholarship and the federal Pell grant, which will pay for a significant portion of a TCSG education.

“We’re actively campaigning to help people throughout Georgia understand that we can help them prepare for the GED ® test and, with a little effort, they can earn a GED ® credential. After that, we’ll assist with their transition from GED ® diploma to college degree or into a better job. I encourage every adult learner in Georgia to make plans now to visit their local adult education center and take advantage of a free GED ® practice test session,” said Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) Assistant Commissioner for Adult Education Beverly Smith.

For class registration information and information on the new GED ® computer-based testing, visit www.savannahtech.edu/cwo/GED_Adult_Education or call 912.443.5446.

Last year, more than 19,000 adult learners earned their GED ® diploma. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, a person with a high school or GED ® credential earns $10,000 more per year than a non-high school graduate. The income level increases substantially more for those who go on to complete a college certificate, diploma or degree program.

Culinary Institute of Savannah now offers Baking and Pastry Program

#1307 | August 9, 2012

Savannah Tech is the first in Georgia to offer credentials for pastry arts

SAVANNAH – Savannah Technical College’s Culinary Institute of Savannah has created a new culinary baking and pastry program. Last week, the Culinary Baking and Pastry Arts associate degree and diploma received final approval from the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG). Based on curriculum from the American Culinary Federation (ACF), the new program will offer students a second culinary associate degree or diploma option at Savannah Technical College.

“We have developed this unique baking and pastry program especially for our culinary students. There is nothing like it from Atlanta to Charleston,” said STC Culinary Arts Department Head and Instructor Chef Jean Vendeville. “This program offers a tremendous opportunity to train our students to achieve high standards and quality baking and pastry skills, which will benefit area hotels and restaurants.”

Student enrolled in the program will learn the art of creating tasty baked goods, pastries, and confections, from traditional bread baking to beautiful showpieces. Students will learn a variety of international and classical pastries and desserts using basic and advanced techniques, which meet industry quality standards.

The Culinary Baking and Pastry program includes foundation culinary courses like Fundamentals of Culinary Arts, Culinary Safety/Sanitation, Principles of Cooking, Baking Principles and Principles of Culinary Leadership. Courses specific to the new program include Baking Science, European Cakes and Tortes, Artisan/Specialty Bread, Hot/Cold-Plated Desserts, Cake Design/Decorating, Confection Artistry, Chocolate Artistry and Dessert/Bread Retail Production with Nutrition in Baking.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, pastry chefs are in-demand and make excellent salaries. Payscale.com reports that the average salary for pastry bakers is more than $40,000 per year. In 2008, specialty chefs represented more than 8,900 jobs. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) predicts job opportunities will increase by nearly 15% in the coming decade, adding 138,000 jobs by 2016. In addition, the BLS indicates highly skilled bakers should be especially in demand because of growing demand for specialty products. In Georgia, bakers earned a median annual salary of $23,190 in 2011, according to the BLS. Based on Department of Labor statistics the mean average salary in the Savannah area is $22,830.

The Culinary Institute of Savannah ACF-accredited culinary arts program has been described as the “best in the U.S.A” by its ACF accreditation review board. Under Vendeville’s leadership, the enrollment for STC’s culinary arts program has increased 130 percent since 2008. Now, there are more than 200 enrolled with new classes offered. This spring he opened another teaching kitchen in Effingham, Ga. Vendeville has assembled a top-notch team of faculty, who have each earned national American Culinary Federation (ACF) certification under his leadership. He has embedded many aspects of sustainability into the program including an on-campus organic vegetable garden, an herb garden, and a composting site.

At the 2012 ACF Southeastern Regional Conference, Vendeville received the top ACF award – the President’s Medallion. This award is the ultimate honor for a lifetime of commitment and service to the standards and excellence ACF exemplifies.

Vendeville was recently named Instructor of the Year by the Technical College System of Georgia and Chef Educator of the Year by the Low Country Chapter of the ACF. He has led student teams to win three consecutive American Culinary Federation (ACF) Southeast Regional Championships – in 2010 in the Hot Food Team competition and back-to-back wins in the Knowledge Bowl competition in 2011 and 2012.  In July 2012, the Knowledge Bowl Team earned a silver medal at the national ACF competition. He has achieved his ACF Lifetime Certification as an Executive Pastry Chef and holds a Lifetime Certification as an Executive Chef from the Chef Association of America.

He is developing his first book, entitled Croquembouche: The Art and Technique. His book will focus on pastry and desserts, prepared in traditional French technique. It will include 250 color photographs and recipes of his creations. His book is slated for publishing this year by Taylor and Francis of London and will be distributed internationally.

Savannah Tech Introduces New Sustainable Technology Programs for Fall 2012

#1305 | August 3, 2012

SAVANNAH – Savannah Technical College offers new Sustainable Technology programs for the Fall 2012 semester. These are the first programs of their kind in the state of Georgia, introducing students to various topics including energy efficiency, energy measures and management, sustainable energy production, green-building construction, and historic preservation.

The College developed these programs in response to career growth trends for residential weatherization, energy auditors with EPA licensure, alternative energy sources – solar thermal and wind power, as well as the specialized electrician certification required for photovoltaic installations.

“The future of industry demands environmentally sustainable technologies,” said STC Dean of Industrial Technology Tal Loos. “Savannah Technical College has taken the lead in developing programs that provide students the training they need to be at the forefront of these rapidly growing career pathways.”

The Sustainable Technology programs offer students the opportunity to have hands-on experience with both energy and construction before going into their area of specialization. The electrical specialization allows students to receive training in residential wiring, solar thermal systems, wind energy and photovoltaic systems. A structural specialization pathway covers energy efficient measures and systems, green building construction technologies and historic preservation/restoration history.

Through Residential Weatherization and HVAC Specialist programs for an associate degree and professional diploma, students learn the various areas of a home energy audit. Graduates will have received training in refrigeration and heating, solar hot water heater installation and overall construction best practices.

Savannah Technical College is establishing itself as a leader in sustainability among Georgia’s Technical Colleges, offering the first solar energy installation and repair program, as well as the only hands-on historic preservation program in the state.

The College’s Construction Management associate degree qualifies students for general contracting licensure one year earlier with the Georgia State Licensing Board for Residential and General Contractors. STC is the first technical college to receive approval for two years of education and one year of work experience for program graduates. According to the licensing board, those wanting to sit for state licensure require four years of on-the-job training with a licensed contractor prior to being approved to take the exam. The Board’s approval of the associate degree program allows students to apply for a license after STC program completion and one year of supervised experience.

Savannah Tech Expands Barbering Beginning Fall 2012

#1304 | July 19, 2012

“Train to Be A Cut Above The Rest”

SAVANNAH – The popular evening-only Barbering program at Savannah Technical College will expand this fall to include a day program at its Savannah campus.

Now, students have the option to choose the day or evening program paths to begin this fall with their cohorts. “We are pleased to offer more options for our barbering students,” said STC’s Lead Barbering Instructor Joycelin Primus. “The demand for our graduates is strong in Coastal Georgia.”

Barbers provide hair styling and beauty services, such as cutting, trimming, shampooing, and styling hair, trimming beards, or giving shaves. Barbers mostly work in a barbershop or salon. Physical stamina is important, because workers are on their feet for most of their shift. All states require barbers to be licensed, with the exception of shampooers. To qualify for a license, candidates must graduate from a state-approved barbering program like the one at Savannah Technical College.

Savannah Technical College’s Master Barber/Stylist program gives students the skills and confidence to excel as a professional barber. Students approach the state licensing examinations backed by hands-on, industry-relevant experience and make a seamless transition from training to the professional world. They learn the classic skills, newest techniques and hands-on experience needed to be a world-class barber, as well as the business skills and management preparation to launch a successful career.

For more information about the STC’s Master Barber/Stylist program, please contact Primus at 912.443.5879 or jprimus@savannahtech.edu.

Three-day Introduction to and Application of Lean Production

#1303 | July 18, 2012

Let’s Talk Lean!

Savannah Tech offers 3-day Introduction to and Application of Lean Production

SAVANNAH – Business owners can create more value for their customers with fewer resources, using the core principle of the lean business model. Savannah Technical College’s Professional Continuing Education will offer this three-day (24-hour) introduction and explanation of techniques and implementation of lean production values.

Toni Kennedy, Owner/President of GEMBAlean, brings more than two decades as a trainer and is Lean Senior Manager for TRW. She will lead the three-day course covering topics including: The 7 Wastes, Where You Should Start, Management by Site, Standardized Work, Communication/Continuous Improvement, One Piece Flow, Quick Changeover and Implementing Lean.

The course will be offered from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. on August 14-16 at the Crossroads campus of Savannah Technical College. The cost is $1,000 per person, and there is a corporate rate available. To register or for more information, contact Reeshemah Johnson at 912.443.5808 or email rjohnson@savannahtech.edu.

Lean thinking changes the focus of management from optimizing separate technologies, assets, and vertical departments to optimizing the flow of products and services through entire value streams that flow horizontally across technologies, assets, and departments to customers.

Businesses in all industries and services, including healthcare and governments, are using lean principles as the way they think and do. The word transformation or ‘lean transformation’ is often used to characterize a company moving from an old way of thinking to lean thinking. It requires a complete transformation on how a company conducts business. This takes a long-term perspective and perseverance. The term “lean” was coined to describe Toyota’s business during the late 1980s by a research team headed by Jim Womack, Ph.D., at MIT’s International Motor Vehicle Program.

Savannah Technical College’s Professional Continuing Education pledges to provide professional short-term job training and community interest classes for Savannah Technical College’s four-county service area and offers many paths to high-wage, high-performance careers. No previous college experience, entrance exams or high school diploma/GED are required to participate in its classes.
