Team Supervisor Leadership Program

Leadership Overview

Course Description

This session discusses the definition of leadership and explores “past” and “current” trends in business leadership. The changing nature of leadership, in order to remain competitive, is also explored.

Course Objectives

Information, activities, and practice provided during this course will enable
participants to:
1. Define leadership.
2. Understand and be able to describe how and why the nature of leadership is changing, in order to ensure companies are competitive.
3. Differentiate the three phases of leadership.
4. Understand the model of Situational Leadership; which illustrates how
individuals can adjust personal leadership behavior, or strategy, based on the situation or need.
5. Apply four decision making and implementation strategies based on the task at hand; the present situation; the abilities and needs of the individual/group; the organizational culture; and the values, traits and behaviors of the leader.
6. Develop a measurable goal for self-development.

Peer Yesterday, Leader Today

Course Description:

Transitioning from an employee to a leader can be a challenge. Becoming a leader can introduce you to many gray areas, ones in which you are dealing with different personalities, emotional and intellectual. The purpose of this course is to enable newly promoted leaders to successfully make the transition from co-worker to leader.

This course will assist new leaders in  building confidence and making a successful transition. Leaders will be provided with the knowledge and skills to handle situations and maximize the opportunities for career advancement, therefore promoting job satisfaction and personal satisfaction.

Course Objectives:

1. Identify the role of the new supervisor and how this role differs from the
non-management employee.
2. Identify the challenges in working relationships created by the
job promotion.
3. Develop the skills, strengths, and confi dence to successfully transition
to leader.
4. Apply strategies to successfully negotiate challenging situations.

Influencing Others

Course Description:

The purpose of this course is to provide leaders with the skills to influence non-direct reports in the workplace. Leaders will learn how to identify their own personality style and the style of other, learn about the concept of trade and gain understanding on the “give and take” environment that exists in today’s workplace. Leaders will also learn how to develop influencing skills and create strategies that allow each individual involved in an interaction to achieve his or her goals. Additionally, leaders will discover roadblocks to influencing others and learn how to minimize barriers to help create a positive work environment.

 

Course Objectives:

1. Describe the importance of influencing others in working situations.
2. Learn individual personality styles and how to use this knowledge to treat others and exert a positive influence.
3. Establish partnerships based on trust, mutual respect and the concept of trade.
4. Establish a SMART goal for personal development.

The Art of Effective Communication

Course Description:

The purpose of “The Art of Effective Communication” is to provide manufacturing employees with basic skills and techniques for communicating more effectively in the workplace. Participants learn that many problems in the workplace can be avoided when time is taken and effort is made to listen and apply the principles of effective communication. The manner in which they communicate with others affects business relationships and result; therefore, it is important that they understand how to relate to others.

Course Objectives:

1. Effectively guide and control conversations by listening attentively,
responding appropriately, and acknowledging feelings making others feel
unique and important.
2. Interpret verbal and nonverbal messages and provide feedback and
reinforcement to ensure understanding and positive business results.
3. Leave a good lasting impression by using positive phrases and body
language, along with a helpful tone, to build rapport and cooperation in
the workplace.

Working Together

Course Description:

Working Together is a one day team-building and team skills course. The goal of the unit is enhance participants’ ability to work together effectively as a team and produce products and services which surpass customer requirements. This highly interactive course explores the four C’s of effective teamwork: communication, cooperation, consideration, and commitment. Participants are introduced to skills necessary to ensure accomplishment of goals within a specific work group.

Course Objectives:

1. Define team “synergy.”
2. Describe four requirements for successful teamwork.
3. Explain four communication styles and how they affect interactions
with people.
4. List ways versatility can be used to communicate more effectively.
5. Identify “positive-impact phrases” that improve team cooperation.
6. Demonstrate how to show consideration for team members using
targeted positive regard.
7. Describe the five stages of team development.
8. Identify specific actions of team members that will enhance team
development at each stage.
9. Demonstrate commitment by creating an action plan for continuous
team improvement.

Conflict Resolution for Leaders

Course Description:

The purpose of this course is to provide leaders with the skills to resolve conflict in the workplace. While conflict exits in every aspect of our lives, the skill of resolving conflict amongst our employees is necessary for us to perform as leaders. Competitive pressures have continually been a source of conflict, while changes in the workplace have provided an opportunity for increased conflict. This course provides leaders with an understanding of the sources of conflict, how to identify or potential conflict situations, and typical behaviors in conflict situations. Leaders will also be provided with the knowledge and skills to resolve and reduce conflict as well as help employees change behaviors that eliminate, reduce, or resolve conflict situations, creating a positive team environment.

Course Objectives:

1. Anticipate and identify potential sources
of conflict among employees.

2.Identify conflict behavior styles.

3. Develop leader skills to assist employees in adjusting
their behavior that effectively resolve conflict.

4.Apply appropriate techniques for resolving
and reducing interpersonal conflict.

Performance Management

Course Description:

During this course, participants will utilize the first step of a four-step “Coaching Model” to develop a Performance Plan. This plan will focus on performance goals, how development and assessment of performance will be implemented and providing feedback and rewards fro employees.

Course Objectives:

  1. Define Performance management
  2. Identify the goals and benefits of Performance Management
  3. Establish performance objectives, assessments, and measurement methods.

Business Ethics for Leaders

Course Description:

This course will enable leaders and professionals to successfully demonstrate and support ethical behavior at work. Through the examination of the impact of both ethical and unethical behavior in the workplace, leaders will determine the best results for the company based on their actions.

Business Ethics for Leaders examines situations that relate to the workplace and the business issues that arise due to unethical behavior. Participants will analyze and identify ethical and unethical behavior as it relates to themselves, as well as their team’s performance on the job and determine the best course of action.

Course Objectives:

1.Define ethics.

2.Explain the difference between ethical
and unethical behavior.

3.Explore the relationship between ethical behavior  and leadership in the workplace

4.Demonstrate and support ethical behavior.

Time Management

Course Description:

In this section, participants will be provided with the tools and knowledge to use their time more effectively. Participants will learn how to manage their individual time in the workplace. The training will focus on teh following areas:

1. Goal Setting

2. Planning

3. Being Proactive

Participants will develop a professional mission statement and use it as a guide to establish a workable time management plan. In addition, participants will identify their own patterns of time usage, discuss typical time management problems that need to be addressed, and plan personal strategies for effective time management.

Course Objectives:

  1. Develop a professional mission statement and use the mission to establish a workable time management plan for yourself and your units.
  2. Use your mission and plan to establish your most important priorities.
  3. Analyze current time management practices.
  4. Identify time-wasters and develop ways to eliminate them.
  5. Set long- and short-term objectives according to both pay-off and priority.
  6. Implement strategies to overcome common time-wa sters. e.g., handling paperwork, use of the phone, meetings, etc.
  7. Use effective time management practices
  8. Set goals for future time management practices

Effective Delegation

Course Description:

Effective Delegation provides participants with the knowledge and skills to effectively delegate as a way to achieve high performance and productivity from their employees in various work space settings. This course offers a foundational understanding of delegation, skill development and practice that will enable mangers to establish a delegation plan utilizing the Five Steps of Effective Delegation. Using these five steps, participants will prepare a delegation plan that can be implemented in the workplace.

Course Objectives:

  1. Define delegation, its benefits and what may be delegated
  2. Describe the complexities of delegating in a complex business environment
  3. Identify and demonstrate the five steps of Effective Delegation
  4. Create and Action Plan to strengthen delegation skills

Coaching

Course Description:

Coaching in Action examines the impact and effectiveness of coaching employees for success. Leaders will learn the behaviors necessary to successfully coach employees or project team members. Leaders will also learn to develop and assess employee performance and use feedback and rewards to enhance employee performance every day.

Through the use of effective coaching, leaders will be able to utilize proven strategies to encourage their employees or project team members to reach their maximum potential, through use of targeted feedback to change unwanted behavior or maintain and reinforce positive behavior.

Course Objectives:

  1. Define the characteristics of an effective coach and the benefits of good coaching
  2. Identify the components of effective coaching
  3. Apply coaching skills and strategies to improve or sustain employee performance
  4. Create an action plan to strengthen coaching skills.
