Hazing Prevention & Reporting

Savannah Technical College is committed to providing a safe learning environment that supports the dignity of all college community members. We maintain zero tolerance for hazing activities and strictly enforce both state law and institutional policy.

Our Commitment to Student Safety

Hazing is a serious public health problem that causes physical and mental harm to students. At Savannah Tech, we recognize our responsibility to protect every member of our college community from these dangerous practices.

Zero Tolerance Policy: Hazing in any form is strictly prohibited at Savannah Technical College, both on and off campus. Violations may result in both disciplinary action and criminal charges.

Compliance with Georgia Law: We fully comply with the “Max Gruver Act” (O.C.G.A. 16-5-61), which requires all Georgia institutions of higher education to maintain transparency regarding hazing incidents.

Understanding Hazing Under Georgia Law

Legal Definition

According to the “Max Gruver Act,” hazing means subjecting a student to activities that:

  • Endanger or are likely to endanger physical health
  • Coerce students through social or physical pressure to consume substances that risk vomiting, intoxication, or unconsciousness
  • Occur regardless of the student’s willingness to participate

“School” means any unit of the University System of Georgia, any unit of the Technical College System of Georgia, or any private postsecondary school, college, or university in this state.

“School organization” means any association, corporation, order, club, society, fraternity, sorority, athletic team, or a group living together which has students or alumni as its principal members, including local affiliate organizations.

“Student” means any person enrolled or prospectively enrolled in a school in this state. (b) It shall be unlawful for any person to haze any student in connection with or as a condition or precondition of gaining acceptance, membership, office, or other status in a school organization.

Criminal Penalties
Hazing violations constitute a misdemeanor of a high and aggravated nature under Georgia law, carrying serious legal consequences for perpetrators.
