Cosmetology students present 2023 Hair Show

RINCON, Ga. – Savannah Technical College Cosmetology students hosted a hair show at the Effingham Campus this week. This annual event provides an opportunity for students to demonstrate their skills and creativity for family, friends, and the community. This year’s theme was masquerade.

Ariella Gallegos participated in the hair show and plans to work at her mom’s salon, Chic & Co. Studio. Ariella earned her GED with prep classes from Savannah Tech and then enrolled in Cosmetology. She is projected to graduate with a Cosmetology Diploma in May 2023.

Jada Lovett is a dual enrollment Cosmetology student at the Effingham Campus and a South Effingham High School senior, who will graduate from high school next month. She is on track to complete the Shampoo Technician TCC this spring and will continue the Cosmetology diploma program at the College. She plans to work in a nail salon and eventually open her own shop.

STC’s hair show started as a fun option for second-year students also known as “seniors.” After the College’s first hair show in 2011, all Cosmetology students were invited to participate, including STC’s dual enrollment students.

STC Cosmetology Instructor Denean Reynolds came up with the idea of a hair show after attending a Bronner Brother’s hair show, one of the biggest in the world. She thought it would be fun and exciting for students to showcase their talent and a great opportunity to promote the program.

The program emphasizes not only specialized training in the field of cosmetology, but also interpersonal relations development, employability skills and work ethics. Students may also take short-term training to earn a technical certificate of credit with for designer, nail technician, and shampoo technician. Cosmetology’s occupational programs are open to high school students in 10-12th grade through Dual Enrollment. For more information about Cosmetology training visit www.savannahtech.edu/Cosmetology.

Peace Officer Academy honors April 2023 graduates

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Twelve students from the Savannah Technical College Peace Officer Academy celebrated graduating from the program with a ceremony on April 20, 2023.

These graduates have completed coursework containing the entire Georgia Peace Officer Standards & Training (P.O.S.T.) Basic Law Enforcement Training Course. Their successful completion of the program qualifies them to be state-certified peace officers.

This is the 41st group of students to complete the program since its inception in 2009. To date, the program has graduated more than 400 P.O.S.T.-certified officers. Eleven of these graduates have been hired by area police departments. STC’s Peace Officer Academy has a 100% placement rate (AY21).

Each cohort selects a fallen officer for whom the graduating class will be named. The cohorts have a tradition of giving the family of the fallen officer a challenge coin dedicated to the officer. A challenge coin is a symbol of an unbreakable bond of dedication and allegiance among military personnel and law enforcement officers. The challenge coin tradition started as a military tradition in World War I and was later adopted by law enforcement.

This cohort honors Capt. Ramsey Mannon of Effingham County Sherriff’s Office, who passed away on August 12, 2021 from complications as the result of contracting COVID-19 in the line of duty. Captain Mannon was a U.S. Air Force Veteran and had served with the Rincon Police Department and Effingham County Sheriff’s Office for 38 years in various law enforcement positions. He is survived by his wife, two children, and two grandchildren.

The Basic POST Certification Technical Certificate of Credit (TCC) provides students with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to become competent law enforcement officers. The 11-week cohort program utilizes classroom instruction pertaining to criminal justice theory and the prevailing principles of modern law enforcement, as well as practical application of pertinent enforcement skills. College coursework contains the entire Georgia Peace Officers Standards & Training (P.O.S.T.) Basic Law Enforcement Training Course so that successful completion of the program will qualify the student to be a state-certified peace officer. Students that qualify for HOPE may receive additional funds through the HOPE Career Grant with this program.

This TCC offers a first step in law enforcement.  Select courses in the Basic Law Enforcement Certificate program transfer towards an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Criminal Justice.  Many agencies pay all or part of the tuition for officers to work toward degrees in criminal justice, police science, administration of justice, or public administration and pay higher salaries to those who earn one of those degrees.

For more information about the Peace Officer Academy visit www.savannahtech.edu/PeaceOfficerAcademy or contact the office at 912.443.5191 or njones@savannahtech.edu.

The next cohort begins in May 2023.
