Young Entrepreneurs’ Academy now accepting applications

SAVANNAH, GA — Motivated students entering grades 6-12 who have the drive to start their own small business are invited to apply to the Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!).

YEA! is a groundbreaking program that transforms local middle and high school students into real, confident entrepreneurs. Through the year-long program, students in grades 6-12 generate business ideas, conduct market research, write business plans, pitch to a panel of investors, and launch their real companies from the ground up, with instruction and inspiration from local leaders. YEA! is ideal for creative, energetic students ages 11 to 18 interested in entrepreneurship.
 
Classes are made possible by Metropolitan Savannah Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and meet weekly at Savannah Technical College main (5717 White Bluff Rd, Savannah, GA 31405) from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays from February through May.
 
The selection process is competitive and open to all middle and high school students.

Battle selected as STC Adult Education 2023 Teacher of the Year

Marjorie BattleSAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah Technical College has selected Marjorie Battle as Outstanding Teacher of the Year for STC’s Adult Education program.

In FY2022, Battle had 70% measurable skills gains with her students at Fort Stewart’s Army Education Center in Hinesville, Ga., setting the standard for these results in the program and throughout the state.

“Not only do students improve their TABE scores, but their ASVAB scores also improve regularly in ways that allow soldiers to continue to pursue their career in the Army,” said STC Economic Development Vice President Brent Stubbs. “She is a military spouse who understands first-hand the plight of soldiers that need to improve their basic skill sin order to retain or improve their employment status.”

Battle has been an adjunct math instructor for the College since 2017. Previously she was a math instructor for Liberty County High School. She has also worked as a math tutor for Youth Challenge in Fort Stewart, Ga. She has a master’s in education from Armstrong Atlantic State University with a major in middle grades education and minor in mathematics. She has a bachelor’s degree in general studies with a minor in education, and studied at Kingsborough Community College with a major in computer science and minor in mathematics.

Savannah Tech’s Adult Education Program serves those who need to improve their basic literacy and math skills, improve their oral and written English, practice for the GED® test to attain a high school equivalency degree, and prepare for college. Instructors also help students with science and social studies test preparation for GED® testing. STC teaches adult education classes in the morning, afternoon, evening and online. They are offered in Bryan, Chatham, Effingham and Liberty Counties with multiple locations in each community. Adult education classes for GED®-prep are currently free for all U.S. citizens.

Renshaw selected as Military Outreach Coordinator

Stephen RenshawSAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah Technical College has selected Stephen Renshaw as its military outreach coordinator. He will coordinate a variety of initiatives enabling current and former military personnel, as well as their family members, to enroll in the college, graduate, and engage in careers with local industries and businesses.

He retired as a colonel in the U.S. Army after 24 years of active duty experience. Most recently a JROTC Senior Army Instructor at Richmond Hill High School. He also worked as the Chief of Staff for the U.S. Army CBRN School in Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. He has an MBA from Cameron University in Lawton, Okla., and a bachelor’s degree in political science/history from Texas Christian University.

The College has the highest military-affiliated enrollment in the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG). One in four STC students is a veteran, active duty service member or a military dependent/spouse. Last year the College was ranked #1 in the 2021-22 Military Friendly® Schools evaluation. For the past four years, the College has been ranked as one of the top Best for Vets public technical and career college in the U.S. by Military Times.

The College waives all general mandatory fees for active duty service members using military tuition assistance. Other services Savannah Tech offers for veterans include workshops and grants. The College has multiple scholarships for military-affiliated students. This includes scholarships that provide gap funding for military with U.S. Coast Guard members, a Freedom Fund to provide needs-based scholarship assistance for soldiers, veteran and spouses and a scholarship that supports Savannah Tech’s military spouses is funded by The Landings Military Family Relief Fund.

Sweetheart Sale features new items in 2023

Gianduja BriocheSAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah Technical College’s Savannah Culinary Institute offers its tenth annual online, pre-order Sweetheart Sale featuring assorted artisan chocolates, pastries and artisan breads just prior to Valentine’s Day at www.bistrosavoir.com.

Hand-made artisan chocolates truffles will be sold in a heart-shaped cardboard box for $32 and in four-packs for $10 with a vegan option. The sale has new items: hot chocolate bomb trio, fresh marshmallows, darkest éclair, raspberry overload cookie, chocolate cherry blackout mini cake, and milk chocolate pretzel cake. There are gluten-free options including coconut macaroons, fudgy buckwheat brownies, and a six-pack of rolls. Additional artisan breads include a Gianduja Brioche and sourdough white chocolate baguette.

The Sweetheart Sale features the finest quality ingredients that are locally sourced, milled and handmade. Proceeds will benefit Savannah Technical College’s Junior Chefs Fund, which supports activities like competitions.

Online pre-order sales are available through February 5, or when quantities are sold out. Orders will be available for pickup at the College’s Savannah campus Friday, February 10 from 10AM – 2PM in the Eckburg Auditorium (5717 White Bluff Road). Savannah Tech’s baking and pastry program was developed by the College to teach the art of creating tasty baked goods, pastries, and confections, from traditional bread baking to beautiful showpieces. Students learn a variety of international and classical pastries and desserts using basic and advanced techniques, which meet industry quality standards.  

Graduates are working as pastry chefs in the area’s finest restaurants and establishments, including Local 11 Ten, Le Café Gourmet, Savannah Yacht Club, and The Landings Club. There are more than 30 students are currently enrolled in the baking and pastry program.

With support from the Savannah Technical College Foundation, the College has purchased 7 West Bay Street as the new downtown location for an expansion of its Culinary Arts program, which will more than double the available instructional space. Senior level (second year) students will take classes and work in the bakery and restaurant. The hands-on, real-world experience in the restaurant/bakery will allow students the opportunity to apply techniques learned in the classroom to practical use, complete a required field placement, and gain first-hand experience in restaurant operations.

Steven CalvertSavannah Technical College recognized 340 students for excellence in academics for the Fall 2022 Dean’s List. To be eligible for the dean’s list, a student must have at least a 3.5 GPA and have completed a minimum of 12 credit hours (or full-time) for that semester. These students represent 28% of the full-time students for Fall 2022.

Grant selected as Executive Director for Advancement/Communications

Robert GrantSAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah Technical College has selected Robert Grant as its Executive Director of Institutional Advancement and Communications. He is responsible for administration, development and initiatives for both advancement and communications including internal and external development programs. He will manage development priorities through the Savannah Technical College Foundation and work closely with donors to enhance College initiatives and workforce development opportunities.

He was raised in a military family and had the privilege of growing up all over the world. He graduated from Clemson University with a degree in secondary education and history. He has spent his whole career in some facet of education.  He started as a high school social studies teacher and then found his way to the nonprofit sector in Development at Junior Achievement of Georgia. He then made the move to higher education as the Director of Development at the Parker College of Business at Georgia Southern University. 

Robert has lived in Effingham County for almost 20 years where he served as a school board member and on the boards of many nonprofits in the Coastal Empire.  He is a graduate of Leadership Effingham and Leadership Southeast Georgia and a member of the Savannah Downtown Rotary Club. Hobbies include just about anything outdoors, kayaking, swimming, biking, and walking. He and his wife Elizabeth live in Guyton with their five children. 

Founded in 1984, the Savannah Technical College Foundation is a private, nonprofit organization that exists to raise and disburse funds to support the College’s efforts to enhance learning, workforce training and economic development in Bryan, Chatham, Effingham and Liberty counties. The Foundation also supports student success through its many privately funded scholarships.
