3.27.20 COVID-19 Update

Monday, March 30 begins online training for all of Savannah Technical College credit courses. Faculty have been working for the past two weeks to move all courses online.

In accordance with Governor Brian Kemp’s Executive Order 03.26.20.02, all TCSG colleges, including Savannah Technical College, will remain closed for in-person instruction with limited exceptions through the rest of the Spring 2020 semester. In lieu of in-person instruction, all TCSG colleges have transitioned to online learning for the remainder of the Spring 2020 semester. Continue to check your STC student email account for updates and information from your instructors.

None of the lab classes that require hands-on or face-to-face instruction and practice will be delivered online. Only the theory portion of those classes will be delivered online. When the health crisis has ended so that all may return to work, we will give students from spring semester extra time to complete their labs without penalty.

Please check STC’s web page (www.savannahtech.edu/covid) regularly for updated information.

3.10.20 COVID-19 Initial Message

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update

Savannah Technical College continues to actively monitor the spread of the novel coronavirus disease, COVID-19, a respiratory illness caused by a novel (new) coronavirus. People in numerous countries, including the United States, have been affected.

The College remains in contact with the Technical College System of Georgia and Georgia public health officials to ensure that we are following the latest information, trends, and guidance from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  We are also in close contact with the Chatham County Health Department.  Local COVID-19 information is available at through the Georgia Department of Public Health – Coastal Health District.

The safety and well-being of the College community is always our highest priority. We will update this page as needed to keep our campus community informed.

Preventing the illness

Currently, there is no vaccine to prevent COVID-19 infection. The best way to prevent infection is to avoid being exposed to this virus. To prevent the spread of respiratory viruses, the CDC recommends everyday preventive actions, including:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

These are everyday habits that can help prevent the spread of several viruses. The CDC also offers specific guidance for travelers.

What happens if a case is identified?

The CDC, Georgia State Department of Health, area health departments, and local health care experts will be integrally involved if a case is detected in our area. The College remains in close contact with them to understand their protocols and refine our plans as the recommendations from national and state authorities evolve and change.

The College has a robust emergency response plan and contingency plans that can be called into place if needed. Additional updates on these plans will be posted here as needed.

3.13.20 COVID-19 Update

In light of the current health issues and concerns resulting from the coronavirus (COVID-19), Savannah Technical College has made the decision to extend spring break until March 28, 2020 and to close all campuses and suspend activities for the next two weeks. Beginning March 30, Savannah Technical College anticipates moving all classes online.

We have made these decisions to address the health concerns surrounding COVID-19 while minimizing the disruption of delivering educational services. While a variety of factors influenced these decisions, be assured that the health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff is always our primary concern.

STUDENTS: If a class you are enrolled in is moving to an online format, you will receive an email from your instructor. They will provide you with next steps and information on how to access your course online. If your program requires in-person attendance for practical experience, you will receive a notification from your instructor on how to proceed.

FACULTY/STAFF: The College will immediately institute as much telework as possible. Your supervisor will follow up with specific instructions for you and your area of responsibility.

Please monitor www.savannahtech.edu and your College email for updated information and resources.

The emergency management team is in constant communication and will continue to develop answers, adjust plans as necessary, and communicate frequently.
