Dental Hygiene students traveled to Belize to offer a prevention-oriented dental program for indigent children through “Project Smile”

#1262 | March 29, 2012

SAVANNAH – Six select senior students in Savannah Tech’s Dental Hygiene program travelled to Belize to provide prevention-based dental care for indigent children. As a participant in Project Smile, Savannah Tech students offered their services free of charge alongside two STC faculty members and Savannah dentist Dr. Steve Acuff, one of STC’s clinical supervising dentists and the president of Project Smile.

Project Smile began in 1992 as a cooperative effort between the Episcopal Diocese of Georgia and the Anglican Diocese of Belize, in Central America. It is a prevention-oriented dental program for indigent children at St. Mary the Virgin Anglican Church in Belize City. An unused classroom at St Mary’s School is home to a permanent seven-chair dental treatment facility. In March 2010, Project Smile opened a four-chair clinic in the mountains near Guatemala.

The clinic treats children ages four to 14 years through cleanings, fluoride treatments, fillings, and treating abscesses. Every child in the schools receives toothbrushes and toothpaste, which are used every day after lunch at school. Every Wednesday students receive a fluoride rinse given by trained adult volunteers.

In 2011 alone, there were five mission trips with five teams from Georgia including Savannah Tech students, Ohio, Colorado, Virginia. Many volunteers return home feeling that they received more benefits than they gave, according to Dr. Acuff. These teams served 588 patients, which would have been charged $229,449 in the U.S. for dental services. But, all services were provided free of charge to the children due to private donations. Since December 2002, Project Smile, Inc. has been a nonprofit corporation with a tax-free status as determined by the Internal Revenue Service in section 501 (c) (3).

Since 1999 Project Smile has expanded its dental program to include the children at:

St. Mary the Virgin Anglican School (all students plus fluoride rinse program); St. John’s Anglican Cathedral School where students are bused three miles (fluoride rinse also); Hattiesville School — bussed 40 miles; The Belize School for the Blind — bussed 90 miles; The Stella Maris Government School- for mentally and physically challenged; All Saints’ Anglican School (added 2003); Queen’s Square Primary School (added 2004); Cayo District School (added 2006); Succotz Town (added 2008).

Since 2010, volunteers participating in Project Smile qualified for continuing education credit for dentists and dental hygienists state licensure requirements in their respective states.

This is the fourth year Savannah Tech’s Dental Hygiene program has participated in this foreign study externship program, in conjunction with Project Smile’s clinic. Top senior students earned college credit while giving back to less fortunate people.

At the end of last summer, Project Smile had sponsored 57 missions completed more than 10,600 patient visits, provided toothbrushes, paste, and weekly fluoride rinses to all willing students in these schools. For more information about Project Smile visit: www.Project-Smile.com.

Graduates of Savannah Tech’s Dental Hygiene program receive an Associate of Science Degree in Dental Hygiene. The program utilizes a competitive admissions process. Students wishing to enter the Dental Hygiene program must complete an application packet by May 1 for admission to the Fall class. For more information about program admission, please contact STC’s Health Sciences Academic Advisor Heather Valentine (hvalentine@savannahtech.edu or 912.443.5721).

New agreement allows for transfer of more courses between Technical College System of Georgia and University System of Georgia institutions

SAVANNAH — Georgia college students now have greater flexibility and transferability between the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) and the University System of Georgia (USG) colleges and universities. this month, the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia approved an additional 17 courses acceptable for transfer, bringing the total number of General Studies courses that students can transfer to twenty-seven.

Says Savannah Tech President Dr. Kathy S. Love, ” I am thrilled that the Board of Regents has expanded the number of general education courses taught at the Technical College System of Georgia institutions which will transfer to our University System of Georgia partners. This is a huge step toward Georgia truly having a seamless educational system and will certainly help us meet Governor Deal’s Complete College Georgia challenge.”

For local students and their families, it means that they can now take more courses at Savannah Technical College with the assurance that the courses included in this agreement will transfer to USG universities such as Savannah State, Armstrong Atlantic and Georgia Southern. (USG press release)

‘Complete College Georgia’ calls for and identifies strategies for the state’s public and private colleges to add an additional 250,000 college graduates – whether a one-year certificate, associate degree, or bachelor’s degree – by 2020. Georgia is a member of the Complete College America Alliance, a group of 30 states committed to significantly increasing the number of students successfully earning a college degree or credential. The state received a $1 million grant from Complete College America in August to focus on transforming remedial education, a core component of the larger complete College Georgia effort.

Culinary Institute of Savannah Wins Awards at ACF Southeastern Conference

#1257 | March 2, 2012

SAVANNAH –Savannah Technical College culinary arts students and its department head for the Culinary Institute of Savannah received top honors at the American Culinary Federation (ACF) Southeastern Regional Conference in Winston-Salem, N.C., February 20-22, 2012.

STC’s Culinary Arts Knowledge Bowl team won the Baron H. Galand Culinary Knowledge Bowl Southeast regional competition and earned a gold medal. Team members include Joshua Lopez (team captain), Jocelyn Brantley, Cameron Harper, Joseph Poulin and Angela Real.

STC’s Culinary Institute of Savannah Department Head and Instructor Chef Jean Yves Vendeville was honored with the top ACF award – the President’s Medallion – at the ACF Southeastern Regional Conference. The President’s Medallion recognizes the ultimate honor for a lifetime of commitment and service to the standards and excellence ACF exemplifies. Chef Vendeville also presented a workshop at the convention, “Contemporary Molding with Sugar.”

The Knowledge Bowl team is one of the final four that will compete at the national ACF convention competition in Orlando, Fla., (July 14-17). This is the third year STC will have sent a team to compete at the national convention. Four of this year’s team members were on the Knowledge Bowl team that competed in nationals last year.

“Our team’s win on a regional level shows the excellent culinary education Savannah Technical College provides,” said Chef Vendeville. He described last year’s national competition as a learning experience for the team. “This year’s team has come back stronger and really wants to win the national title,” said Chef Vendeville. “They are working harder and training differently to build the confidence it takes to win the national competition.”

To earn a gold medal in the Knowledge Bowl a team must score an average of more than 600 points in two of the five games in the competition. The 2012 STC team had already earned 600 points at the end of its first two games – “creaming the competition,” according to Chef Vendeville. Last year’s Knowledge Bowl team won the Southeastern regional competition, but only earned a bronze medal with 400 to 500 points.

First held at the 1992 ACF National Convention in Washington, D.C., the Baron H. Galand Culinary Knowledge Bowl is the brainchild of Carol Kelly, a member of the Nation’s Capital ACF chapter and a culinary instructor. She used the competition format to test her vocational high school students. As the competition grew, it was named after former ACF President and long-time advocate of apprentices and junior members Baron H. Galand, CEC. Today, the competition includes sensory questions, hidden pictures, and of course challenging culinary, baking, nutrition, sanitation and math questions.

The Culinary Institute of Savannah offers ACF-accredited diploma and degree programs in culinary arts and has been described as the “best in the U.S.A” by its ACF accreditation review board. Under the leadership of Chef Vendeville, student teams have won three consecutive ACF southeast regional championships – in 2010 in the Hot Food Team competition and back-to-back wins in the Knowledge Bowl competition in 2011 and 2012. There are more than 200 students enrolled in the program, which opened a second teaching kitchen in Effingham, Ga. this year.

ECET students bring BRIAN to life for engineering robotics competition

SAVANNAH – A team of five Electronic and Computer Engineering Technology (ECET) students at Savannah Technical College have designed and built a robot for competition. B.R.I.A.N. (Beginning Realm of Intelligent Artificial Navigation) will compete in a robotics competition at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Southeast Conference on March 15 – 18 in Orlando, Fla.

STC’s team members Megan Kittrell, Davon Cleary, Derek Edens, Jeremy Hefner, and Jeffrey Meeker (not pictured) created an autonomous information-gathering robot, aka BRIAN, who will traverse a maze-like course, analyzing electrical signals and other information along the course. The signals and information will allow BRIAN to make decisions in order to follow the proper path. The students have applied the knowledge from their analog, digital, and instrumentation courses at Savannah Tech to design and build BRIAN. Robots like BRIAN could be used for practical purposes such as inspecting a ship’s hull and exploring the far reaches of space.

“I am proud of our students, and this is proof that they are receiving a quality education that will enable them to solve real-life problems,” said STC’s ECET Department Head Dr. Oluwayomi Adamo. “I wish them good luck.”

In Fall 2011, Savannah Tech established a student branch of IEEE, the world’s largest professional association dedicated to advancing technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity. The group is formed among students enrolled in the college’s ECET program with Department Head Dr. Oluwayomi Adamo serving as Branch Counselor and Derek Edens serving as Student Branch Chair.

Savannah Tech’s Historic Preservation Visiting Artisan Series features Rudy Christian

#1259 | March 08, 2012

SAVANNAH – Savannah Technical College will host its Historic Preservation Visiting Artisan Series featuring Rudy R. Christian, an internationally acclaimed timber framer, the week of March 24 – April 1, 2012.

Christian will work with STC students and Nizagara-online.net to cut a traditional timber frame picnic shelter that will be erected on campus at a “shelter raising” on Saturday, March 31 at the College’s main campus in Savannah, Ga. He will present at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 28th at the Kennedy Pharmacy at the corner of Habersham and Broughton Streets. His presentations will be entitled “a Place for the Trades.”

The visit is being coordinated by STC’s Department Head and Instructor of Historic Preservation Stephen Hartley. ““As Georgia’s only hands-on historical preservation program, we are proud to offer our students opportunities to learn from master tradesmen,” said Hartley. “Rudy’s visit continues our goal of augmenting our traditional study with masters in their chosen craft,”

Christian is a founding member and past president of the Timber Framers Guild and of Friends of Ohio Barns and a founding member and past executive director of the Preservation Trades Network. He is also a founding member of the Traditional Timberframe Research and Advisory Group and the International Trades Education Initiative. He speaks frequently about historic conservation and also conducts educational workshops.

He has published articles, including “Conservation of Historic Building Trades: A Timber Framer’s View,” in the “APT Bulletin,” Vol. XXXIII, No. 1, and his recent collaborative work with author Allen Noble entitled “The Barn: A Symbol of Ohio,” has been published on the Internet. In November 2000, the Preservation Trades Network awarded Christian the Askins Achievement Award for excellence in the field of historic preservation.

As president of Christian & Son, Inc., his work has included numerous reconstruction projects, such as the historic “Big Barn” at Malabar Farm State Park near Mansfield, Ohio, and relocation of the 19th-century Crawford Horse Barn in Newark, Ohio. These projects featured “hand raisings,” which were open to the public and attracted a total of 130,000 interested spectators.

He also led a crew of timber framers at the Smithsonian Folk Life Festival, Masters of the Building Arts program, in the re-creation and raising of an 18th-century carriage house frame on the Mall in Washington, DC. Roy Underhill’s “Woodright’s Shop” filmed the event for PBS, and Roy participated in the raising.

Christian studied structural engineering at both the General Motors Institute in Flint, Mich., and Akron University in Ohio. He has also studied historic compound roof layout and computer modeling at the Gewerbe Akademie in Rotweil, Germany. He is an adjunct professor at Palomar College in San Marcos, Calif., and an approved workshop instructor for the Timber Framers Guild.

The College’s Visiting Artisan Series brings three world-class craftsmen to campus each for a week in October, February and April. This series has gained international recognition and has contributed to a number of community-based preservation projects in the surrounding communities. Rudy’s visit is being sponsored by Sanctuary Place Inn, the Davenport House, Southern Pine Company, and Historic Savannah Foundation.

SAVANNAH – For the ninth consecutive year, Savannah Technical College has received national recognition for its marketing efforts, winning a Gold Award in the 27th Annual Educational Advertising Awards for its “I am Tourism” promotional video. Four related commercials also received Awards of Merit in the competition.

The “I am Tourism” campaign focuses on testimonials from local and regional tourism leaders touting the value of education and the advantages of a career in the hospitality industry. “The tourism industry brings millions of dollars to our regional economy every year and improves the quality of life for all of us,” said STC Marketing and Hospitality Department Head Brendan Ferrara. “This campaign helps reinforce this as an excellent career choice.”

The same video won a Silver ADDY award at this year’s American Advertising Federation local ADDY awards, sponsored by AAF Savannah.

Credits for the video include: Gail Eubanks, creative director; Aaron Gravits, producer; Darryl E. Van Horne, composer; Jason Osterday, videographer; and Bob Jones, photography.
