STC to Offer Evening Peace Officer Academy
Program starts in January; offers POST certification in one year
Enrollment information session – November 3, 6 PM
People interested in knowing more about the evening Peace Officer Academy are invited to attend an Enrollment Information Session on November 3 at 6 pm in Goodman Hall Room 1125 on the Savannah Campus, 5717 White Bluff Road.
The Peace Officer Academy at Savannah Technical College is one of six based at technical colleges throughout the state and boasts an impressive record of employment and placement. Many of its students are sponsored by area law enforcement agencies that are committed to hiring them upon POST certification. Others, a total of 38 thus far, have come into the Academy prior to having an affiliation with an agency and all but one of them have had job offers pending their completion of the program, making the placement rate for graduates 98% in this the first year of the Academy. “It speaks to the quality of our instruction,” says Vic Burke, department head for Criminal Justice and a former police chief. “Students come here knowing that they’ll get the classroom and hands on training they need for employment.”
Academy classes are taught by certified officers and the curriculum includes criminal investigation, constitutional law, safety, defensive tactics, emergency vehicle operation and firearms training.
