Savannah Technical College to offer Cosmetology to Liberty County

Second new program announcement in as many days; public information sessions next week

SAVANNAH – Beginning this fall, students in Liberty County and surrounding areas will have two new career training opportunities, with the arrival of a cosmetology diploma program and a commercial truck driving certificate program – both offered by Savannah Technical College and announced this week.

The diploma program in Cosmetology is designed to take six quarters to complete and will be offered Monday -   Thursday evenings from 6 – 9 PM and two half-day Saturdays per month. Classes will begin October 12 and will be taught in the cosmetology lab at Liberty County High School, off Hwy 84 in Hinesville. “Being able to offer classes in the evening will allow students to continue working while they complete the program,” says Kim Cutter, Department Head and Instructor of Cosmetology. The college will hold an information session for the public on Thursday, October 1 at 6 PM in Room 122 at the Liberty Campus of Savannah Technical College on Airport Road in Hinesville. The program includes theory and practical applications of cosmetology and prepares students to test for their cosmetology license – a credential that allows them to practice in all but two states. It is covered by the Georgia HOPE grant for eligible students, meaning there is very little out-of-pocket expense associated with the course. Military, spouses and family members are immediately eligible for the HOPE grant.

The Commercial Driving License (CDL) certificate program can be completed in ten weeks and will be taught in a soon-to-be-constructed classroom at the old Liberty County Airport site on Airport Road in Hinesville. Classes begin October 5 and will be offered during daytime hours Monday – Thursday. The college will hold an information session for the public on Monday, September 28 at 4 PM in Room 140 at the Liberty Campus of Savannah Technical College on Airport Road in Hinesville .

The Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) program has been offered by Savannah Technical College for more than twenty years and its curriculum is a model for the state’s technical colleges. The program is a ten-week certificate program that includes 70 hours of classroom instruction and 240 hours of hands-on instruction. It is HOPE grant eligible, allowing students to take advantage of a state-funded grant program that covers tuition and most fees, greatly reducing students’ out-of-pocket costs. “This is a great value,” says Mike Patterson, Dean of Industry and Public Service programs. “Students can spend less than $400 and get an education valued at almost $3900.”

The college owns and operates a fleet of 14 trucks and 14 trailers for its CDL program.  For additional information about these programs or the upcoming information sessions, please contact the Liberty Campus at 912.408.3024 x 6000.
