Welcome to the Historic Preservation & Restoration Department!

The Historic Preservation & Restoration Department offers several programs of study that prepare students for careers in Historic Preservation & Green Building technology.

Occupational Trends: As the construction industry changes, more emphasis is being placed on reusing existing structures, many of which are historic. Working with historic buildings requires specialized skills which are not typically held by workers employed in the new construction fields. As this trend continues, more qualified workers will be needed to fill the positions on construction companies, museums and educational institutions, and government agencies.
Career Description:Careers in the preservation field may vary as widely as the building materials used in historic buildings. Graduates can focus on specializing in the restoration on one or more building materials. They can also be employed in general construction and contracting firms, or can be placed in government agencies such as the National Park Service, General Service Administration, the Department of Natural resources, and the Department of Transportation.
Employment Trends:Since the construction trades fluctuate yearly, employment in the preservation field will reflect that fluctuation. However, it is forecast that the trend of reusing existing buildings will continue, and that more specialized workers will be needed to fill these positions. Employment opportunities vary greatly for graduates. Some places of employment include general contractors, specialized preservation firms, museum and educational institutions, Federal government agencies such as the National Park Service and General Services Administration, State agencies such as the Department of transportation and the Department of Natural resources, as well as local government agencies such as Housing Department ts and the City of Savannah's Park and Tree Department.
