Welcome to the Aircraft Technology Department!

The Aircraft Technology Department offers several programs of study that prepare students for careers in aircraft structures manufacture and repair, luxury craft cabinetmaking, and aircraft electrical equipment repair and installation.

Occupational Trends:At present, job growth in this industry is predicted to be low to moderate. However, government contracts are being negotiated with various aerospace suppliers in the state which can potentially increase employment demand by several hundred to thousands of individuals in the next two years. The skills learned in these programs are needed by local employers who are experiencing increasing growth in their business and need qualified entry level employees in the areas of luxury craft cabinetmaking  and electronics and avionics systems to meet their business demands.
Career Description:Aircraft structural technicians can either work on the new manufacturing side of the trade or the repair side. The manufacturing side involves working on aircraft in a team assembly cell type of environment. Work is based on customer orders and generally his is an hourly type of position with growth to become an manager. The repair side involves working on all types of aircraft both old and new in a hanger type of environment. Work flow is dependent on customers needing repairs in an airport setting and is paid hourly but only on an as needed basis.
The Luxury Craft Cabinetmaker typically works in aircraft manufacturing plants and service centers installing and repairing various types of cabinets, counter-tops and furniture in new and owned aircraft. however these same skills can also be applied in the building or maintaining of luxury yachts.
Aircraft electrical assembly techs typically work in aircraft manufacturing plants installing various types of electronics equipment and wiring into new aircraft. However, these same skills can also be applied to the building and maintaining of luxury yachts.
Employment Trends: Job growth overall in this industry is predicted to be low to moderate over the next 5 years. However, demands for building new aircraft to replace older aircraft may promote some growth (about 9%) in the aerospace manufacturing sector over the next 5 years.
In 2005 there were close to 700 luxury craft cabinetmakers and 700 avionics technicians working in Georgia and over 17,000 working in the US in each industry. Job growth in this field is predicted to be about 3% regionally and 12% nationally for the next 5 years. The most growth is predicted to be in aerospace product manufacturing and service.
