Since its inception in 2008, the Peace Officer Academy has successfully graduated three cohorts of students, 98% of whom have been hired by local law enforcement agencies.
The Peace Officer Academy program utilizes classroom instruction including criminal justice theory and the prevailing principles of modern law enforcement, as well as practical application of pertinent enforcement skills. The college coursework contains the entire Georgia Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Basic Law Enforcement Training Course so that successful completion of the program will qualify the student to be a state-certified peace officer.
The Academy course includes Firearms, Physical and Defensive Training, Emergency Vehicle Training, K-9 Orientation, Radar, First Aid and CPR and Organized Crime Investigation as part of the hands-on curriculum.
Classes run two college quarters, for a total of 708 hours. Students participate in classroom as well as physical training exercises.
A separate P.O.S.T. application is required as well as a Savannah Technical College Admissions Application, completion of a COMPASS test, Fingerprint and Background Investigation. The application process takes approximately one month to complete.
Application Packets are available at the Peace Officer Academy office in Goodman Hall, Room 1125A.
