Welcome to the Medical Front
Office Assistant Program of Study!
The program provides the educational opportunities to enable students to obtain the knowledge and skills necessary to work as a receptionist in a physician's office, hospital, clinic or other related areas (Technical courses apply to the degree and diploma programs in Business Administrative Technology).
Job/Career Description: Receptionists and assistants are charged with a responsibility that may affect the success of an organization-making a good first impression. Persons in these positions answer telephones, route and screen calls, greet visitors/patients, respond to inquires from the public, and provide information about the organization. In a medical office environment, receptionists and assistants may be responsible for gathering patient information and directing them to waiting rooms.
Occupational Trends: Employment of receptionists or assistants is expected to grow faster than average for all occupations. Additional job opportunities will result from the need to replace workers who transfer to other occupations or leave the labor force. Good interpersonal and customer service skills are critical for this job. Being an active listener and the ability to relay information accurately to others is also important.
Employment Trends: Receptionists and assistants are expected to increase by 17 percent from 2006 to 2016, which is faster than the average for all occupations. Technology will have conflicting effects on employment. The increasing use of voice mail and other telephone automation reduces the need for receptionists by allowing one to perform work that formerly required several. At the same time, the increasing use of other technology has caused a consolidation of clerical responsibilities and growing demand for workers with diverse clerical and technical skills. Since receptionists and assistant require a wide variety of clerical tasks, they should continue to be in demand.
