Savannah Technical College to Salute Community STARS
SAVANNAH – The Savannah Technical College Foundation Community Council will host the 2014 Tribute to Community STARS at noon on Friday, March 28, 2014, in the Eckburg Auditorium on the College’s Savannah Campus, 5717 White Bluff Road. The event, now in its eighth year, honors more than 20 individuals nominated for their service and dedication at work or in the community, while raising funds for the Savannah Tech Foundation scholarship fund.
“This event has become a wonderful tradition for our community,” said STC’s Executive Director of Institutional Advancement and Communication. “The people being honored are amazing, and the sponsors are very generous. Because funds raised support scholarships, Savannah Technical College students benefit directly.”
Savannah Technical College has a strong commitment to supporting students from every walk of life in their academic pursuits. With a diverse student body, the College serves as a primary training center of the region’s workforce, serving a wide range of full-time and part-time students. Even though Savannah Tech offers the most affordable education in the region — $85 per credit hour as compared to public universities at nearly twice that and private institutions at triple that cost – many students simply cannot afford to attend. More than 80% of all students meet the eligibility requirements to receive state or federal financial assistance to attend college.
The Savannah Technical College Foundation, founded in 1984, is a private, nonprofit organization that exists to raise and disburse funds to support the College’s efforts to enhance learning, workforce training and economic development in Bryan, Chatham, Effingham and Liberty counties. The STC Foundation also supports student success through its privately-funded scholarships. The STC Foundation currently awards between $75,000 and $100,000 in privately-funded scholarships annually, but that total meets only a fraction of the overall need.
The Tribute to the Community STARS is an annual event that not only helps recognize the members of the community but also serves as one of the leading events to help students fund their higher education. Tickets are $100. Proceeds from the tickets, as well as silent auction items produced by current students, will go to the STC Foundation.
Savannah Technical College serves Coastal Georgia with quality, market-driven technical education with campus locations in Chatham, Effingham and Liberty Counties. Serving more than 4,500 credit students each semester, Savannah Tech offers nearly 150 different instructional programs in Aviation Technology, Business and Technology, Public Service, Industrial Technology, and Health Sciences in addition to Adult Education classes, industry-specific training and continuing education. The College serves as an economic and community development partner for the region, offering corporate and customized training and assessment programs for business and industry. The College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
